How often do you think about the Roman Empire?

Turns out, more often than I thought! Roman shades, primarily made from linen or hemp, were originally used in the Roman Empire; hence, the name. They have stood the test of time because Roman shades are among the most popular requests I receive from my sewing clients today!

They can be used in virtually any room and are a great option when you want to “finish” a window, but you don’t want the bulk of curtain panels. The color, material, and style used can change the look drastically, making Roman shades a versatile and popular window treatment option.

While seemingly simple in design, there are several components to consider when designing a Roman shade. For example:

• Style
• Inside/Outside mount
• Material
• Lining
• Trim/Embellishments
• Locking mechanism
• Right or left side lock
